Tjokro berjuang dengan membangun organisasi Sarekat Islam, organisasi resmi bumiputera pertama yang terbesar, sehingga bisa mencapai 2 juta anggota. Ia berjuang untuk menyamakan hak dan martabat masyarakat bumiputera di awal 1900 yang terjajah.
Perjuangan ini berbenih menjadi awal-awal lahirnya tokoh dan gerakan kebangsaan. Tak lama setelah menikah dengan Suharsikin (Putri Ayudya), Tjokro pindah ke Surabaya dan dari situlah perjuangannya semakin berkembang. Tjokro yang intelektual, pandai bersiasat, mempunyai banyak keahlian, termasuk jago silat, ahli mesin dan hukum. Ia juga penulis surat kabar yang kritis, orator ulung yang mampu menyihir ribuan orang dari mimbar pidato.
Apa yang dilakukan Tjokro membuat pemerintah Hindia Belanda khawatir. Mereka mulai bertindak untuk menghambat laju gerak Sarekat Islam yang sangat pesat. Perjuangan Tjokro lewat organisasi Sarekat Islam untuk memberikan penyadaran masyarakat, dan mengangkat harkat dan martabat secara bersamaan, juga terancam oleh perpecahan dari dalam organisasi itu sendiri.
Rumah Tjokro di Gang Peneleh, Surabaya, terkenal sebagai tempat bertemunya tokoh-tokoh bangsa Indonesia kelak. Salah satunya adalah Haji Agus Salim (Ibnu Jamil) yang juga merupakan tokoh pergerakan nasional Indonesia. Di rumah sederhana yang berfungsi sebagai rumah kos yang di bina oleh istrinya, Suharsikin. Tjokro juga mempunyai banyak murid-murid muda yang pada akhirnya mempunyai jalan perjuangannya masing-masing.
Mereka meneruskan cita-cita Tjokro yang mulia untuk mempunyai bangsa yang bermartabat, terdidik, dan sejahtera. Salah satu muridnya di Peneleh adalah Bapak Proklamator Indonesia, Soekarno (Deva Mahenra). Hubungan keduanya cukup dekat, bahkan sempat menjadi keluarga. Soekarno alias Koesno pernah menikah dengan salah satu anak Tjokro, Utari. Tapi perkawinan hanya bertahan selama sekitar dua tahun dan kemudian berpisah.
Saat istrinya menderita sakit, Tjokro tetap berusaha untuk meneruskan perjuangannya meski terancam masuk penjara. Di sisi lain, beberapa murid didiknya seperti Semaoen (Tanta Ginting), Musso (Ade Firman Hakim) dan Kartosuwiryo membelot dan keluar dari Sarekat Islam dan mendirikan partai baru yang menjadi cikal bakal Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI).
#Review:
Guru Bangsa Tjokroaminoto berkisar seputar perjuangan Tjokroaminoto bersama organisasi Sarekat Islam yang dipimpinnya juga irisan ideologinya dan keputusan-keputusannya terhadap para murid dan rekanny. Karena film ini berlatar sejarah, maka sulit mengupasnya tanpa melalui kacamata sejarah pula. Sangat tampak, film ini disajikan secara utuh dan 'fair'. Tjokroaminoto, terlepas dari jasa besarnya, bahkan diagung-agungkan sebagai Raja Jawa tanpa Mahkota dan satrio ia didudukkan secara baik dan bukannya dengan potret diri yang negatif atau terlalu positif, tetapi memang apa adanya. Tjokroaminoto bukan dewa, bukan orang maksum. Ada banyak konflik pasang surut dalam perjalanan hidupnya semasa memimpin Sarekat Islam yang dirangkum secara apik selama 160 menit. 
Sekalipun namanya diabadikan sebagai identitas jalan-jalan raya, kenyataannya banyak mereka yang kurang akrab dengan sejarah bangsa ini yang tak tahu menahu soal beragam jasa yang telah ditorehkan oleh Hadji Oemar Said (HOS) Tjokroaminoto untuk melepaskan Indonesia dari cengkraman Belanda yang terlanjur kuat sekaligus membawanya pada kejayaan.
Kisah dimulai dengan Tjokro kecil yang dimainkan dengan apik oleh Christoffer Nelwan yang melihat penderitaan pekerja-pekerja perkebunan kapas yang dianiaya oleh mandor-mandor Belanda. Kegelisahan Tjokro terhadap keadaan juga diperlihatkannya di sekolah, dimana dia berani berdebat dengan guru Belanda totok. Sementara itu narasi-narasi agama Islam yang kuat tentang “hijrah” pada akhirnya berperan membentuk karakter dan kesadaran Tjokro terhadap posisi pribumi terhadap kolonial. Dan ketika beranjak dewasa, Tjokro pun mulai bertindak.Era dimana Tjokroaminoto tumbuh besar adalah era fajar baru dimana politik etis Kolonial mulai melahirkan elit-elit pribumi yang “tercerahkan”. Tjokro adalah salah satunya. Selain itu, gagasan baru tentang nasionalisme dan pan-islamisme mulai bertumbuh di Hindia Belanda (Indonesia). Tjokro yang sedari awal sudah melihat potensi Islam Nusantara sebagai pemersatu lalu “hijrah” ke Surabaya. Di sanalah semua kisah perjuangan bermula. Dari bertemu Haji Samanhudi pendiri Sarekat Dagang Islam (SDI), mengumpulkan pengikut, mengubah “Sarekat Dagang Islam” menjadi “Sarekat Islam (SI)”, mengganti blangkon dengan peci, hingga bersama pengikutnya menentukan arah perjuangan.
Judul “Guru Bangsa” sendiri bisa dijabarkan secara harafiah. Rumah Tjokro bersama istrinya di Gang Paneleh Surabaya seolah menjadi inkubator bagi calon-calon tokoh perjuangan bangsa kedepan. Mulai dari Agus Salim muda, Semaoen, Dharsono, Musso, hingga Kusno (Soekarno) yang masih culun namun antusias. Gagasan-gagasan baru selain pan-islamisme-nya Tjokro juga mulai berbenih. Terinspirasi dari Revolusi Bolshevik Russia, Semaoen dan kawan-kawan mencoba mengubah arah SI menjadi lebih revolusioner dan radikal. Sejarah mencatatnya sebagai “SI Merah” yang berfokus pada perjuangan kelas-kelas pekerja pribumi yang tertindas untuk merebut haknya.
Pendekatan Garin Nugroho kali ini sedikit teatrikal (dalam arti positif) dibandingkan film biopic sebelumnya yang ia garap. Sosok Tjokroaminoto benar-benar jadi inti cerita dalam film ini. Selain lakon-lakon utama, adegan para kawula-jelata dan tokoh-tokoh semi-fiksi juga banyak porsinya. Stella yang diperankan oleh Chelsea Islan yang merupakan gadis campuran Bali-Belanda yang terpaksa berjualan koran karena ayahnya seorang Belanda tulen di deportasi ke negeri asal nenek moyang nya, dan ibunya seorang Nyai Jawa yang hanya berstatus wanita simpanan, tidak mampu membesarkannya, karena tidak kuat menghadapi tekanan publik akibat menyandang status sebagai seorang "Kafir" dan diceritakan juga sebagai pengagum Tjokroaminoto juga mencintai tanah pribumi.
Lalu ada karakter-karakter komikal seperti Bagong lelaki cebol sahabat Stella, Mbok Tun pembantu di Rumah Paneleh yang cerewet dan doyan mengeluh, Cak Kartolo seniman ludruk, Si Dasi Kupu-kupu, Jenderal Stoom, dan juga ada serombongan seniman Belanda yang punya gedung pertunjukan di Surabaya dan suka membawakan seni pertunjukan barat seperti teater dan ballet. Christine Hakim, artis kawakan yang super terkenal itu, muncul sebagai Mbok Tambeng, kolega Mbok Tun di dapur Rumah Paneleh. Mereka adalah Tokoh-tokoh fiksi yang membawa keceriaan dalam keseriusan.
Sulit untuk tidak dibuat terpesona terhadap film ini. Ciri khas Garin yang berpuitis ria memang masih menonjol kuat di sini. Tak hanya itu saja, Garin sangatlah detail untuk urusan setting lokasi, tempat, hingga properti. Suasana awal tahun 1900an berhasil tersaji dengan amat baik disepanjang film. Deretan trem, mobil klasik, kereta api kuno yang kinclong dan masih berfungsi, setting rumah zaman dulu, hingga replika Oranje Hotel dihadirkan dengan sempurna oleh Garin.
Letak kekuatan berikutnya dari Guru Bangsa Tjokroaminoto berada pada jajaran pemainnya yang sungguh apik dan cemerlang. Tidak perduli seberapa jenuhnya anda melihat Reza Rahadian bermain dalam deretan Film Indonesia akhir-akhir ini (Ya! Dia ada dimana-mana) namun tak dipungkiri bahwa beliau adalah salah satu aktor terbaik yang dimiliki Indonesia saat ini. Mulai dari Habibie dalam film HABIBIE & AINUN (2012), Aziz yang kejam namun rapuh dalam film TENGGELAMNYA KAPAL VAN DER WIJCK (2013), Satrio yang nyeleneh dalam film KAPAN KAWIN? (2015), Donald Pandiangan dalam film 3 SRIKANDI (2016) hingga yang terbaru sebagai Bossman yang super menjengkelkan dalam film MY STUPID BOSS (2016). Reza selalu memberikan performa terbaiknya ditiap film yang ia mainkan. Kali ini pun ia sebagai sosok tokoh bangsa, mampu memerankan Tjokro dengan baik. Gesture dan gaya berbicara Tjokro ditampilkan dengan apik. Konon Reza mendalami karakter Tjokro ini hasil interpretasi dirinya sendiri usai mendalami sosok Tjokro hanya dalam bentuk cerita, sejarah dan foto saja.
Sebagai generasi aktor aktris muda, penampilan pemain lainnya seperti Tanta Ginting, Ibnu Jamil, Ade Firman Hakim, Deva Mahenra, Putri Ayudya, Alex Abbad, Chelsea Islan, Christoffer Nelwan, dan Maia Estianty tampil memberikan performa terbaiknya. Bahkan aktor-aktris senior langganan Piala Citra macam Christine Hakim, Didi Petet, Alex Komang hingga Sujiwo Tedjo rela "turun kelas" berada dideretan pemeran pendukung, namun beruntung penokohan yang mereka perankan tetap "kuat berkarakter". Tak heran jika ensemble cast Film GURU BANGSA: HOS TJOKROAMINOTO ini mendapat penghargaan ENSEMBLE CAST TERBAIK dalam ajang Indonesian Movie Actor Awards 2016. Tak hanya itu saja, film ini juga meraih berbagai macam penghargaan lainnya seperti FILM, PENATA ARTISTIK DAN KAMERA TERPUJI dalam Festival Film Bandung 2015, SINEMATOGRAFI, PERANCANG BUSANA DAN ARTISTIK TERBAIK dalam Festival Film Indonesia 2015, FILM BIOSKOP TERPILIH dan ENAM PENGHARGAAN lainnya dalam Piala Maya 2015.

#Synopsis:
Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) merasa khawatir dengan adik tirinya Martin (Gabriel Bateman). Martin yang tinggal bersama ibu Rebecca, Sophie (Maria Bello), mengatakan bahwa kini ia merasa tidak nyaman karena “diganggu” oleh roh jahat bernama Diana (Alicia Vela-Bailey), roh jahat yang hanya muncul di kegelapan. Rebecca “tahu” siapa Diana namun ketika ia bersama pacarnya Bret (Alexander DiPersia) mencoba untuk “mengalahkan” Diana mereka menghadapi rintangan karena Sophie yang telah lama memiliki masalah kesehatan mental menganggap Diana sebagai teman baiknya, begitu pula sebaliknya.

Terror gelap dalam short-movie LIGHTS OUT (2014) yang heboh di dunia maya kala itu membuat beberapa rumah produksi tertarik untuk membuat versi layar lebarnya. WarnerBros pun akhirnya yang “goal” untuk memproduksi LIGHTS OUT versi layar lebar. WarnerBros kemudian Menggandeng David. F Sanberg sebagai sutradara serta Man Behind of THE CONJURING SERIES (2013, 2016), James Wan yang kali ini duduk dibangku produser.
Premis cerita LIGHTS OUT (2016) kali ini sungguh menarik. Kondisi gelap serta perasaan seperti ada seseorang yang mengikuti dibelakang kita ketika berjalan sendirian atau berada dalam kegelapan menjadi terror yang efektif disajikan difilm ini. Gue suka dengan sutradara David F. Sanberg yang sangat menghormati versi short movie nya dimana trick “nyala..mati..nyala..mati..nyala..dan BOOM!” menjadi jumpscared iconic dan efektif memberikan sensasi menyeramkan. Tak hanya itu saja, sang sutradara juga memberikan batasan bahwa si sosok misterius itu hanya muncul jika dalam kondisi lampu dimatikan. Itu adalah ide yang cukup segar. Hal tersebut berhasil membuat orang (termasuk gue) yang nonton Film LIGHTS OUT (2016) ini akan selalu waspada, ketakutan dan memacu adrenalin ketika set film sedang minim atau bahkan tidak ada cahaya sama sekali. Jalan cerita drama yang dihadirkan pun cukup pas dan masuk akal. Tekanan psikologis yang dialami sang Ibu yang keukeuh ia masih merasa ditemani sosok perempuan bernama Diana serta hubungan dengan kedua anaknya pas.
Dengan durasi yang padat dan singkat tidak melar seperti THE CONJURING SERIES, nyatanya LIGHTS OUT (2016) masih bisa memberikan modern horror-movie yang efektif. Endingnya pun dieksekusi dengan cukup baik dan berhasil. Tidak seperti Film yang diproduseri James Wan sebelumnya yaitu ANNABELLE (2014) yang jelek itu.
