I have compiled a list of 10 movies that can be termed as underrated - movies that do not get the attention and viewership they deserve but deserve to be watched. These movies don't generally end up in Top 50, Top 100 or even Top 250 movie lists, but are definitely worth watching. With the hope that they eventually have a cult following of their own and get the attention they deserve, here's my list:

1. 84 Charing Cross Road (1987)

Directed by - David Jones
Cast - Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft
It is hard to put into words how dearly I loved 84 Charing Cross Road. Movie adaptation of a book by the same name written by Helene Hanff, this lesser known flick is a treat to watch. Specially for book lovers.
Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins shine in this charming drama told in the form of a two decade long correspondence that begins when a struggling New York based writer (Anne Bancroft as Helene Hanff) who loves British Literature, writes to a bookstore in London that specializes in out-of-print English classics. Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) a reserved, well read Englishman, one of the staff of Marks & Co. responds to her request and thus begins an adorable camaraderie between Helene & the staff of Marks & Co.

The parents are trapped, their beloved sons are taken away from them and they are thrown in jail.
With incredible performances from all, the story is heart wrenching and will leave you terrified by the end of it.

This engrossing courtroom drama makes you think. The trial scenes are gripping. And the performances are stellar. I always find movies with courtroom trials, thrilling - and this one did not disappoint me.

This stunning three-part romance captures a relationship, as two young strangers meet, connect, part ways, and meet again only to part again over the course of almost two decades. If there has ever been an ode to the perfect modern day fairly tale romance, it is this sweet & charming trilogy. This is exactly how you would dream you would want meet your soulmate. The dialogues are a blend of intelligent conversation and passion - extremely impressive. The chemistry between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) is amazing in their incomplete yet meaningful relationship.

 

 

 

 

 

7. Take the lead (2006)

A must watch for dancers and dance lovers, Take the lead is a feel-good movie that tells the real story of a dance instructor from New York who immensely believed in the talent of his students. The dances are a treat to the eyes. Antonio Banderas is extremely charming in his portrayal of the dance teacher and he also dances with a lot of aplomb & panache.
Being a dancer myself, dance-based movies usually attract me. And this movie, for me, is the most simple yet memorable one from that genre.

8. Carnage (2011)

Directed by - Roman Polanski
Cast - Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly

An adaption of the play 'God of Carnage' written by Yasmina Reza, this film revolves around a cordial meeting that two sets of parents arrange, when they learn of the altercation their sons were involved in. After the initial pleasantries, the four adults, who have extremely contrasting personalities, gradually start speaking their minds and as a result start exhibiting increasingly childish behavior. Eventually, the so-called civilized discussion turns into chaos.
With magnificent star cast & equally brilliant performances, the movie is a thoroughly-enjoyable-must-watch-comedy.

9. The Walk (2015)

Directed by - Robert Zemeckis
Cast - Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Charlotte Le Bon, Guillaume Baillargeon
Set in the Paris of 1970s, The Walk is one of the most stylish and thrilling biopics I've ever watched. Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a French street juggler and high-wire artist who puts together a team of people to help him realize his dream of walking on a high-wire between The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
Robert Zemeckis has created a breathtakingly beautiful visual masterpiece. The Walk is a highly entertaining adventure, meant to be watched on the big screen.

 

10. Burn After Reading (2008)

Directed by - Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Cast - Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, Elizabeth Marvel
Two gym employees accidentally find a disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent & attempt to blackmail the owner & try to sell the disk to the Russians believing it to be top-secret government information.
Burn after reading is a quirky, funny & fast paced situational-comedy. This film is convoluted - it is essentially a comedy wearing the mask of a spy-thriller. The innate stupidity of the characters coupled with unfortunate coincidences cause chaos. It is weirdly funny & hence won't please everyone. In fact, most reviews that I came across - of this movie - online, suggest that most of them did not get the film.

Throwback Thursday with Blogspot

Tak terasa sudah memasuki tahun 2017. Itu artinya tahun ke-4 gue aktif menulis di blogspot pribadi gue. Banyak banget hal-hal yang gue share dalam kurun waktu empat tahun terakhir ini. Yaudah deh.. Postingan kali ini gue akan sedikit flashback alias throwback beberapa hal yang paling mengesankan selama empat tahun bersama Blogspot. Kebetulan juga postingan kali ini dibuat pas hari kamis. Jadi gue kasih title nya Throwback Thursday with Blogspot. Hehe.

The Timeline

Sebelum memutuskan untuk membuat Blog pada tahun 2013, awalnya gue menulis hal apapun lewat Twitter dan menggunakan fitur twitlonger jika pengen nulis panjang. Dulu gue agak males untuk menggunakan Blog lantaran keterbatasan gadget yang dimiliki. Laptop lemot, mau ke warnet bikin boros dan ponsel cuma sebatas punya fitur JAVA (Opera Mini) ya sudahlah gue asik asik aja via Twitter.

Seiring waktu berjalan, tweet-tweet panjang yang selalu gue bikin terus tertutup oleh tweet-tweet baru. Gak ada arsip sama sekali. Jadi kalau kita mau cari tulisan, harus scrolling terus kebawah. Cara ngakalinnya paling gue klik favorite atau like biar gampang kalau dicari jadi tinggal masuk ke tab favorite atau like di twitter. Tapi hal itu tak langsung lama. Gue masih ada aja kendala, postingan twitlonger gue isinya full tulisan gak ada gambar sama sekali. Gue jadi pengen bikin postingan yang bisa insert gambar dan video.

Dan akhirnya awal tahun 2013 gue memutuskan untuk bergabung dengan Blogspot.

Postingan pertama gue kala itu adalah postingan tentang Review Film Oblivion (2013) dan Java Heat (2013). Postingan itu gue bikin sekaligus dengan bikin design blog seadanya cuma ngambil dari design yang disediakan blogspot di warnet terdekat dengan rumah. Usai bikin postingan itu, gue semakin rajin jika selesai nonton film gue akan bikin postingan review filmnya di blog.

Seperti para blogger lainnya, gue juga sangat memperhatikan viewers blog. Sebenernya tulisan postingan gue itu ada yang baca apa kagak :)) Gue terinspirasi dari beberapa blog tentang review film contohnya Postingan Biasa milik Joseph Xavier dan Cinetariz milik Tariz Solis. Gaya bahasa dan tulisannya ringan dan sesuai dengan apa yang gue rasain ketika usai nonton film atau menulis.

Makin lama, gue makin coba betah di Blog. Mayoritas postingan dari awal hingga sampai sekarang adalah postingan tentang review Film, baik itu Film Indonesia maupun Film Hollywood yang gue tonton. Cara efektif bikin page viewers gue nambah adalah langsung memberikan link postingan itu ke akun-akun para pemain film, sutradara hingga rumah produksinya. Tak hanya itu saja, gue juga diberi tahu oleh salah satu teman, untuk men-share postingan apapun ke akun Warung Blogger di twitter @Warung_Blogger. Setelah gue follow, gue jadi makin bisa browsing antar sesama blogger diluar soal perfilman. Twitter Warung Blogger sangat bermanfaat buat gue karena selalu me-retweet hal apapun yang para Blogger posting di blog pribadinya.

Upgrade & New Content Posts

Masuk tahun 2014, gue sedikit menambahkan konten baru diblog. Tak hanya soal review film, gue juga ngasih postingan tentang musik dari idola gue. Gue juga langsung merubah tampilan design blog biar enak dipandang mata (meskipun tetep gratisan template nya) dan bertahan hingga sekarang.

Tahun 2014 juga menjadi tahun paling mengesankan menurut gue. Kenapa? Karena postingan gue tentang review Film Horror Indonesia berjudul Rumah Gurita (2014) menjadi pusat perhatian. Haha :))

Gue secara terang-terangan bilang Film itu emang jelek bahkan Film Horror Terjelek dari Jose Poernomo. Sang aktris dan Rumah Produksi tidak terima dibilang ia jelek dan langsung memarahi gue di twitter. Bagi yang belum nonton silahkan nonton saja Film Rumah Gurita (2014) yaa!

Gue termasuk tukang review dan bikin postingan yang apa adanya bahkan spoiler di review juga gue sering. Kalau misalkan filmnya bagus pasti gue puji kok. Kalau jelek ya jelek

2015-2016 is Beyond Post

Tahun 2015 bisa dibilang tahun yang paling mengesankan bagi gue. Banyak beberapa kegiatan yang gue lakukan bersama komunitas MovieHolic Tasikmalaya. Agenda #NoBarMHT bersama puluhan MovieHolic Tasikmalaya di Bioskop dan kenal dengan beberapa teman teman baru. Berkat Film juga gue punya seorang movie-partner satu kota yang selalu siap sedia jika ada film baru yang tayang. Tahun 2015 itu juga untuk pertama kalinya gue bisa pergi bareng temen ke Bandung naik kendaraan roda dua (dibonceng sih tepatnya) :)) Selama di Bandung itu banyak pengalaman yang takkan pernah gue lupakan. Explore spot keren, tempat makan populer di Bandung hingga cobain Bioskop satu persatu. Tak hanya itu saja, Banyak moment-moment tak terlupakan sepanjang 2015-2016 kemarin. Mulai dari undangan premiere beberapa film, menang quiz, menang VIP Access Konser SIDES Afgan, undangan Festival Film Bandung hingga Piala Maya 2016.

Ya meskipun banyak beberapa masih di draft karena sempat mengalami baper yang amat mendalam selama beberapa bulan pada 2015-2016 lalu yang menyebabkan mood menulis di postingan gue ancur heuu :((

The film has made $ 453.3 million on the box office which made it the fifth highest grossing film of 2017 till date. This one was among the most awaited movies of 2017. This sequel has shown some more exciting experiences of the team meanwhile they unfolds the mystery behind Peter Quill's true parentage.

            

The third part of the movie Guardians of the Angel Vol 3 is planned already and we can say that another dose of entertainment will be there soon with some fresh and exciting story line because the first two parts have already raised the hopes of cine goers.

[Review] Alien Covenant: Asal Usul Xenomorph Akhirnya Terungkap

#Synopsis:

10 Tahun usai kegagalan pesawat angkasa Prometheus mencari asal-usul pencipta manusia, Wayland Corp memutuskan kembali mencari planet di ujung galaksi untuk mengembang biakkan ras manusia di planet yang baru dan masih tetap mencari asal usul mereka.

Misi kali ini menggunakan pesawat angkasa bernama Covenant. Ketika 7 Tahun 6 Bulan lagi tiba ke planet diujung galaksi yang bernama Origae-6, Pesawat Covenant mengalami guncangan akibat gelombang yang dihasilkan dari suatu ledakan bintang. Hal itu membuat beberapa team eksplorasi Origae-6 terbangun dari hyper-sleepnya. Mereka adalah Daniels (Katherine Waterston), Oram (Billy Crudup), Tennesee (Danny McBride), Demien Bichir (Lopé), Karine (Carmin Egojo), Ricks (Jussie Smollett), Upworth (Callie Hernandez), Fariz (Amy Seimetz) dan Ledward (Benjamin Rigby). Namun sayang, sang kapten team eksplore Origae-6 bernama Branson (James Franco) tidak terselamatkan akibat gangguan itu. 

Setelah memperbaiki panel pesawat Covenant, Oram yang kini menjadi pemimpin menggantikan Branson mendapat sebuah signal samar-samar dari sebuah planet yang jaraknya lebih dekat dengan pesawat Covenant.

Ia memutuskan untuk menyelidiki asal usul signal itu dan berencana mendarat di planet misterius itu. Ia yakin bahwa planet yang mengirim signal itu adalah planet yang layak untuk dihuni dan cocok untuk mengembang biakkan ras manusia. Dibantu dengan Walter (Michael Fassbender) humanoid versi terbaru dan beberapa rekan lainnya, Oram akhirnya berhasil mendarat di planet itu. Mereka kemudian mengeksplor tiap sudut daratan di planet itu.

Tak disangka, rupanya mereka menemukan bangkai pesawat Prometheus. Disaat yang bersamaan pula keadaan dua awak pesawat Covenant tewas diserang oleh sosok Neomorph di planet itu. Ditengah kondisi yang semakin mencekam, beruntung team pesawat Covenant yang tersisa diselamatkan oleh David (Michael Fassbender), Humanoid yang sukses selamat dan bertahan hidup di planet tersebut berkat bantuan Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) sebelum Elizabeth Shaw akhirnya meninggal pada saat pesawat Prometheus tiba di planet ini.

Namun ternyata usai dibantu oleh David, bahaya terus mengintai para awak pesawat Covenant yang tersisa. Kehadiran Xenomorph juga semakin membuat awak pesawat Covenant dalam bahaya hingga akhirnya mereka mengetahui sebuah rahasia yang sebelumnya belum mereka ketahui selama ini.

Kontroversi Makna Filosofis Film PROMETHEUS (2012) sukses menjadi bahan perbincangan dikalangan pecinta film kala itu. Banyak yang menganggap Ridley Scott berimajinasi terlalu liar menggambarkan sosok pencipta manusia dan alam semesta adalah seorang mahluk hidup. Sekuel dari Film PROMETHEUS (2012) juga menjadi salah satu film yang dinantikan oleh pecinta film Hollywood. Ending dari Film PROMETHEUS (2012) sendiri menurut pengalaman gue ketika nonton menjadi semacam benang merah untuk menggabungkan Film PROMETHEUS (2012) dan Saga Film ALIEN (1979) karya Ridley Scott. Ketika rumor bahwa Ridley Scott akan membuat film tentang Alien, banyak yang berspekulasi bahwa film tersebut adalah sekuel dari PROMETHEUS (2012).
Film ALIEN: COVENANT (2012) pun akhirnya resmi dirilis di Bioskop Indonesia mulai 10 Mei 2017. Menurut pendapat gue, Film ALIEN COVENANT (2017) ini bukanlah sekuel resmi dari Film PROMETHEUS (2012). Kenapa? Karena tidak terlalu banyak membahas hal-hal yang menggantung di film itu. Film ini menjadi semacam spin-off gabungan dari Film ALIEN (1979) dan PROMETHEUS (2012). Disini Ridley Scott tidak memberikan sentuhan filosofis yang kental seperti Film PROMETHEUS (2012). Beliau disini justru menceritakan sosok asal usul Xenomorph dan Neomorph (Spesies Alien) dari mana asalnya dan siapa penciptanya. Tak hanya itu saja, beberapa adegan yang memicu adrenalin dan jumpscared ditebar dalam jumlah yang cukup banyak disini. Beberapa adegan iconic Film ALIEN (1979) direka ulang oleh Ridley Scott difilm ini.
Untuk segi cerita juga Film ALIEN: COVENANT (2017) tidak berbeda dengan Film-Film Alien Space Movie kebanyakan. Tentang sebuah pesawat luar angkasa yang tujuannya sudah jelas mau ke Planet Origae-6 tiba-tiba berbelok ke Planet lain yang jaraknya lebih dekat. Alasannya pun cukup sepele karena mendapat signal tanda-tanda kehidupan disana. Namun penonton sepertinya sudah bisa membayangkan apa yang akan terjadi selanjutnya. Salah planet, terror datang, satu persatu mati dan menyisakkan karakter perempuan yang bertahan. Pola nya serupa dengan Saga Film ALIEN (1979) maupun PROMETHEUS (2012).
Namun disini sensasi thrillernya cukup efektif ditebar dari awal hingga akhir film. Penonton terus diberi adegan menguras detak jantung lewat adegan kejar-kejaran dan sembunyi dengan para monster Alien. Film ALIEN: COVENANT (2017) juga memberikan ide baru dalam aksi menegangkan antara para awak Covenant dan Alien yaitu di sebuah daratan, ladang gandum dan hutan belantara.
Sosok Xenomorph dan Neomorph yang ditampilkan sangat menyeramkan dengan kekuatan bergerak cepat dan susah mati. :)) Jajaran pemain pun memberikan performa apiknya. Katherine Waterston yang sebelumnya tampil di Film FANTASTIC BEASTS (2017) tampil mengesankan, terlebih dari pertengahan menuju akhir film. Sosok Daniels menjadi terlihat semakin tangguh seperti sosok Elizabeth Shaw pada Film PROMETHEUS (2017). Namun untuk beberapa pemain lainnya, karakter yang diperankan belum ada yang memberikan penampilan mengesankan malah mayoritas pada panik dan ceroboh kelakuannya. :))
Untuk segi visual dan scoring musik, Film ALIEN: COVENANT (2017) ini cukup memukau dan menambah imajinasi seperti apa keaadan luar angkasa dan planet misterius itu.
